Kundalini Awakening: The After-Effects

An awakening is one side of the coin, the happenings *after* the awakening are the often overlooked and much more important side of the coin, if not a totally new coin altogether.

Kundalini is not a show. And it´s not to be taken lightly. It´s not a drug-like, flashy, fancy experience to tell your friends about and feel like a better, different or more special human being. It´s not the new thing to do. It´s not about the physical sensations, the possible hallucinations, the eventually perceived state of euphoria or the event itself. It´s not about constantly pushing the energy up in the higher chakras so that an almost otherwordly mental state appears, which helps to escape daily life.

Kundalini is the possible expansion of consciousness, if it is understood as something highly more intelligent than our own mind and therefore needs space and time to unfold in its own way. The awakening is simply a seed that has been planted throus practice or by the grace of God, without previous knowledge or desire for an awakening. It´s an experience. Not more not less. A very strong one, but still – an experience. And as all the yoga scriptures highly underline: Don´t get attached to any experience on the way to enlightenment. There might be many, all different in their own way and different in effect on each person. Don´t get attached to new found skills, perceptions or higher levels of energy. Don´t give it to the mind.

After-Effects of an Awakening

What is often overlooked after the actual awakening is the importance of giving the energy space to unfold in it´s own way, so that it truly can rise. Kundalini energy is a very strong energy that has it´s own way of working through the chakras, one at a time, and then ascending towards the higher chakras and higher states of consciousness. This can then bring about amplified energy and a deeper understanding of the meaning of life and its everyday lessons. It´s a cleansing process that requires a lot of changes, a lot of letting go and a lot of patience.

Double Snake, like the double helix of the DNA, the union of Ida and Pingala and the activation of DNA.

Double Snake, like the double helix of the DNA, the union of Ida and Pingala and the activation of DNA.

Kundalini is traditionally depicted as a snake. The awakening simply meets a meeting with the snake. And if we fully give in to the process, it means we are becoming the snake, gradually shedding old skin, old skin, old skin. A rhythm, a transformation, a constant movement, a dance with the divine.

As the energy starts to rise the energetic vibration of our energy body is raised dramatically, as in no other occasion in energy work, which means that outside circumstances that are not in resonance with this new vibration anymore inevitably have to change, either actively or involuntarily. If this process is blocked the energy might get very ‘loud’ in us. There will be changes in the brain too, as the rational left side of the brain gets shut down for a certain period of time and the creative and intuitive right side of the brain gets highly activated. If the ego is strongly in place, this is a very uncomfortable process as control and planning is simply not possible in that period. There might be other side effects, of not being able to keep the time or perform certain tasks that were easy before (e.g. calculating). These processes don´t last forever, but take the time they need in order to shift the energy in the brain and upgrade the consciousness to a new level. Especially the activation of the right side of the brain, which we usually ignore in our Western world, takes time so that divine consciousness can flow through and guide us into becoming an truly activated being.

Kundalini Awakening and the 7 Demons of the Chakras

Kundalini awakening is a very intimate and vulnerable experience.

Oftentimes, it can be confusing—shattering every aspect of our lives and disrupting stable grounds, plans, and constructs we’ve previously established. However, once she is out of the box, nothing can stay the same.

I was blessed—or sometimes, I like to say cursed—with two of these awakenings in the span of 10 years, which led me on a path of deep introspection, healing, and continuous chakra work. It’s an ongoing process that does not seem to end, since individual healing leads to collective healing; and from the personal, we progress to the family tree; and from there, the generations and the collective come next.

Jesus ridding Mary Magdalene of the 7 Demons

The Bible speaks about Jesus ridding Mary Magdalene of seven demons, and since all scriptures are related to each other and have at their core the awakening of consciousness, there is a link from the Christian scriptures to the Hindu scriptures. The link is the chakras—and, of course, the serpent.

Mary Magdalene has often been misunderstood as a woman and misinterpreted in her role at the side of Jesus. She has been depicted as a promiscuous woman with a negative influence on the son of God; so naturally, when Jesus rids her of “seven demons,” she goes down in history as a woman in a pact with the devil—someone who needed a classic Christian exorcism.

But, what if everything in the Bible was symbolic? What if everything was a metaphor? Well, in fact, many stories in the ancient scriptures are metaphors, composed with a richness in symbolism, which helps to access deeper layers of the subconscious mind, rather than the conscious one.

The seven demons that possessed Mary Magdalene are the exact same demons we all have. These demons are the seven faces of the ego. Each one of them is specific to an area in our life and related to a specific chakra. (And by the way, the chakras appear in all world religions too.)

Jesus ridding Mary of the seven demons does not mean that he actually performed an exorcism; he simply released karmic seeds and conditionings from each of the chakras, so that Mary could take up the role at his side as a healer and leader, initiating their followers into higher states of consciousness in alignment with God.

Kundalini Healing

However, since higher states of awareness are only possible when we overcome the ego and understand its sneaky influence on our minds, healing at the core is needed. The more we get rid of the ego—which stands in between us and the world, in between us and pure cosmic consciousness—the stronger our healing capacities become, and the more light can flow through us, and thus spread outward into the world.
